It is a fitting day for me to write this blog, today would have been my mom's 81st birthday. This past weekend Ronnie and I had a great time. Saturday we went down to the Brier Hill Fest in Youngstown and today we went to a Guardians game. Both activities would have been Anita approved.
Let's start with Saturday night. Ronnie and I drove down to Youngstown- our first stop was the cemetery- where all the flowers my cousin and Aunt put on the graves are gone except for my parents. Seriously, who steals flowers off a grave. We then went to St. Anthony to park and walked down the hill. Our first stop- the St. Anthony Pizza booth. We saw some parishioners and I got a half hot half mild pizza. Being down there is such a warm feeling for me. As we walked around, Ronnie remarked on the many food trucks- Pepper and Egg sandwiches, Rimedio's Desserts, Fried Calamari, Steak Sandwiches, Wedding soup sandwiches (this is a chicken breast with a sausage patty, fried greens and mozzarella cheese), Braciole sandwich, and Gennesse Beer- $3 a 12 oz glass. The ITAM right on the corner, Wine and peaches at the Bocce courts. Ronnie and I found ourselves a table (we got lucky). Saturday night is the hot pepper contest. It was such a beautiful night. Nice breeze and we were blessed with beautiful company. My cousin Maria, who is from Brier Hill came down and we got to catch up with her. Later in the evening my dear friend Beth and her family came down and we got to catch up with them until we had to leave. Throughout the night I saw some other old friends and it was just so lovely. The best part of Youngstown is it is just always home. I love Cleveland and have lived here for almost 30 years now, but Youngstown just will always feel comfortable. I love bringing Ronnie there and showing him where I grew up and telling him stories and having him become part of it. Probably because it is such a part of me.
